When my daughter was in 4th grade, she brought home a CD called Mind Over Matter. Now this year her grade is singing one of the songs, Take a Stand, in an assembly. It is a great CD with positive songs the are fun for kids. The brochure it comes in has information about alcohol prevention and the negative effects it can have on a child. For more information on this CD you can contact the Utah State Office of Education. 801-538-7713.
Cd is great, my 9 year old daughter is playing it all the time and singing along with it. The songs are very professional and catchy, not your normal cheesy stuff. We need more of this stuff for our kids!!!!! Big time thumbs up from this parent!!!
My kid also brought home a copy of this Mind Over Matter. We listened to it, completed the homework assignment and in this short time had a full discussion about what alcohol would do to his life. It was a great family activity.
Does Mind Over Matter have a place where I can download the songs? Maybe Parentsempowered can put it on their site???

A Mind Over Matter Moment

My daughter recently brought home the Mind Over Matter music CD. She first saw it as just another homework assignment. She had little desire to listen to the music and message. However, it turned into a very entertaining learning opportunity for both her and me. When I opened the packet, the CD was actually cracked. So, I went to the Mind Over Matter website and listened to the snippets of the songs. Then, I sang them with my daughter in different styles – from rap, to opera to country. She actually thought this part was fun. And, even though she thought it was going to be a boring assignment, it actually accomplished its goal – it gave me, as her mom, a good opportunity to talk about the issue of underage drinking – set consequences and think of ways she can say no to peer pressure. The CD was a great tool and worked extremely well when we worked together. Nice work!
